Almost all arthroscopic knee/shoulder surgery is done on an daycase basis (discharge by evening) with the exception of crucitate ligament reconstruction (2-3 days of stay), Bankarts repair (recurrent dislocation of shoulder-overnight stay) ) and large rotator cuff repair(overnight stay)
Arrival
The orthopaedic surgeon will inform you with specific details about your appointment. You will likely be asked to arrive at the hospital at 8:00am and report to the lobby counter. You can have a light breakfast before 6 am. Fast yourself from 6 am onwards. The surgery normally begins at 12 pm.
Anesthesia
When you first arrive for surgery, a member of the anesthesia team will talk with you. Arthroscopy is normally performed under regional anesthesia or occasionally general anesthesia
• Regional anesthesia numbs you below your waist
• General anesthesia puts you to sleep
The anesthesiologist will help you decide which method would be best for you.
If you have regional anesthesia, you may be able to watch the procedure on a television monitor.
